Glacies delenda est (Latin) - ICE must be destroyed

“Carthago delenda est”, or “Carthage must be destroyed”, is a modern form of a quote attributed to Cato the Elder. He declared this repeatedly to the Roman senate prior to the Third Punic War, warning against the wealth and military threat of Carthage. After an attack on the Roman Empire from Carthage, Rome did eventually retaliate and destroy the city. Although the salting of the land is a later literary invention, its imagery is poignant here.

The clothing, shoes, hairstyle, umbrella, and amphora in this piece are all based off of Roman paintings and sculptures.

Manus deponite Chicago! (Latin) - Hands off Chicago!

The Morton Salt company was founded here in Chicago, still carrying over some of its history in the Salt Shed venue. I have given a nod to their Umbrella Girl mascot, as salt is used to keep our streets safe and free of ice. Further Chicago symbolism can be found on the girl’s headpiece, bearing the stars of the city’s flag.
