Bella Ciao

The mondina of Italy - women working as seasonal rice paddy laborers in the late 19th and early 20th century - were revolutionary in the history of labor organization. Their protests against horrible working conditions, long hours, and low pay displayed the power of an organized workforce and striking. Their work, and likely their own music, inspired many protest and anti-fascist songs, including “Alla mattina appena alzata” and “Bella ciao”.

Black and red have long been used as flags and other symbols by anarchists and socialists, often flown together, without specifically known origin. The colors have been used by anarchists since at least the late 1800s, documented used in cockades in Italy. Diagonally divided black and red flags were documented as early as the early 20th century, seen used by anarcho-syndicalists in the Spanish Civil War. More recently, this bisected flag has also been more generally referred to as an antifascist flag.

Black thorned roses are another anarchist symbol, used over the years by publishers, bookshops, and other organizations.
